Samsung Partners With IDEMIA to Bring Mobile Driver’s Licenses to Samsung Wallet

Samsung Electronics America announced it is bringing mobile driver’s licenses and state IDs to Samsung Wallet. Arizona and Iowa will be the first states to offer a mobile version of its driver’s license to their residents. The update expands the Samsung Wallet experience by adding a convenient and secure way to use state-issued IDs and driver’s licenses with a Galaxy smartphone, including the new Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5.1 In early 2024, Samsung will also release a software development kit (SDK) so developers can integrate online age and ID information into their applications to help reduce fraud and friction with the verification process.

From making age-restricted purchases safely to accessing your ID for airport security, mobile driver’s licenses are a new and exciting technology poised to streamline everyday life.

In partnership with IDEMIA, the global provider in identity technologies and issuer of 55 million identity documents in the United States annually, including their digital equivalents in six states, Samsung will utilize the ISO/IEC 18013-5 standard to implement mobile driver’s licenses that are secure, accurate, and private. These are certified Digital IDs verified against and issued by state DMVs. Mobile driver’s license information is securely stored on a Samsung device, while being completely controlled by the license holder. By offering outstanding software and best-in-class security, Samsung looks forward to broadening the availability, usage, and acceptance of digital IDs across industries.

Mobile Driver’s Licenses Through Samsung Wallet
Implementation of mobile driver’s licenses varies from state to state. Mobile driver’s licenses through Samsung Wallet will be available for residents in Arizona and Iowa later this year.

Samsung is working closely with several more early-adopting states and will also collaborate with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) on a test program to accept mobile driver’s licenses at 25 federalized airports where the technology is currently available.2

In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5, a complete list of devices compatible with Samsung Wallet is available here.

SDK for Online Verification Through Samsung Wallet
In early 2024, Samsung will release the SDK for developers for “Know Your Customer” applications where a true identity is required. This will allow app makers to easily place a “verified ID” button within their app to efficiently and securely prove the user’s identity – reducing the user burden of ID verification and reducing the drop-off rate for businesses and services that require this information.
