LG Energy Solution announced its strategic expansion into the battery safety diagnostics software sector, reflecting the growing global emphasis on electric vehicle (EV) safety. The company, already a leader in battery manufacturing, aims to enhance its offerings with advanced Battery Management Systems (BMS) that prioritize the safe operation of batteries.
Advanced Safety Diagnostics with Over 90% Accuracy
LG Energy Solution’s new diagnostics software, built on two decades of empirical battery data and over 8,000 BMS-related patents, boasts an accuracy rate exceeding 90% in detecting battery defects. The software has already been integrated into more than 100,000 EVs, offering comprehensive analysis of potential battery issues, including voltage drops, battery tab failures, micro internal short circuits, and abnormal degradation patterns.
The software distinguishes itself from other market solutions by relying on real-world data rather than predicted conditions, which has traditionally led to lower accuracy rates. LG’s approach involves detailed disassembly and analysis of over 130,000 battery cells and 1,000 battery modules, ensuring the software’s high reliability.
Preemptive Detection of Potential Issues
With the rising focus on EV safety, automakers are increasingly prioritizing the development of sophisticated battery condition management systems. LG Energy Solution’s diagnostics software, integrated into automotive BMS, offers preemptive detection of battery abnormalities, alerting drivers to potential future issues such as thermal incidents. Currently, this technology is being used by nine major global automakers and is gaining attention for its compatibility with batteries from other manufacturers.
Expanding Collaborations with Global Automakers
LG Energy Solution plans to expand its diagnostics software business through partnerships with global automakers, leveraging its advanced technology and proven safety diagnosis accuracy. Hyuksung Chung, Vice President of the Business Development Group, emphasized the company’s commitment to collaborating with clients to ensure the safety of EV batteries. “Our software, backed by extensive patents and empirical data, outperforms the competition and is ready for immediate application in automotive BMS,” Chung stated.
Innovative Degradation Prediction Technology
In addition to safety diagnostics, LG Energy Solution has developed technology that precisely predicts battery degradation, with an error rate reduced to within 1%. This advancement, supported by AI-enhanced algorithms and real-time data analysis from 12,000 vehicles, enables the software to accurately forecast battery capacity and degradation based on driving patterns and other factors.
Looking ahead, LG Energy Solution is also developing BMS software optimized for Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs), anticipating a future where vehicles serve as comprehensive lifestyle platforms. Collaborations with industry leaders like Qualcomm Technologies and Analog Devices, Inc. are further strengthening LG’s BMS capabilities, positioning the company at the forefront of the evolving mobility landscape.
