The luxury automaker unveiled its first fully electric vehicle in New York, marking a bold shift toward a zero-emission future while targeting high-net-worth buyers in the United States.
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has unveiled the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer priced from £130,000 (approximately $172,900), signaling the brand’s transformation into an all-electric luxury marque. The vehicle was revealed in New York as part of JLR’s strategic push to expand its presence in North America, where the automaker sees significant growth potential despite lower EV enthusiasm compared to Europe.

The Type 01 represents a high-stakes gamble. With a starting price aimed at affluent consumers, JLR is betting that wealthy buyers will embrace electric technology—a conviction not universally shared across the luxury automotive sector. Orders open in early 2027, with UK production beginning that year and deliveries expected in the second half.
Design and Performance
The Type 01 embodies classic Jaguar aesthetic principles reimagined for the electric era. Featuring a dramatic silhouette with a low roofline, extended bonnet, and distinctive 23-inch wheels, the car prioritizes visual impact. Its 0.23 drag coefficient makes it the most aerodynamic Jaguar ever produced, achieved through active vanes and a three-stage deployable spoiler.

Power is substantial: three electric motors deliver up to 1,030 horsepower and 1,365 newton-meters of torque, enabling acceleration from 0–100 kilometers per hour in 3.2 seconds. A 118-kilowatt-hour battery delivers approximately 400 miles of EPA-rated range, with the ability to recover 200 miles in just 13 minutes using 350-kilowatt rapid charging.
Manufacturing and Investment
Production takes place at JLR’s Solihull plant in the UK, with components sourced from British suppliers including Wolverhampton (electric drive units and batteries) and Halewood in Merseyside (body panels). Nearly 9,000 Solihull workers have undergone retraining for electric vehicle manufacturing. JLR has allocated £11.5 billion of a £15–18 billion investment program announced in 2024, predominantly directed toward UK facilities.
Strategic Context
The launch occurs amid industry headwinds. JLR recently announced workforce reductions of nearly 10 percent through voluntary redundancies and is recovering from a cyberattack that disrupted production last year.
The Type 01 challenge mirrors broader industry skepticism. While Ferrari and McLaren have questioned wealthy buyers’ appetite for electric luxury vehicles, and Lamborghini has ruled out EV production before 2030, JLR is committing its entire lineup to electrification. The Type 01 will determine whether that bet pays off.
