Hyundai Mobis Unveils Autonomous Rear Safety Technology to Prevent Highway Collisions

Hyundai Mobis has introduced an advanced rear safety control technology designed to prevent rear-end collisions during highway driving, marking a significant leap in the realm of autonomous driving safety.

Announced on June 11, the new system utilizes a sophisticated integration of rear-side radars, front-facing cameras, and various sensors to detect dangerously close vehicles from behind. When paired with the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) function, the system actively monitors the surrounding environment. If a trailing vehicle approaches within 10 meters, it initially alerts the driver with audible beeps or visual warnings on the dashboard cluster. Should the threat persist, the vehicle autonomously accelerates to increase the distance from the vehicle behind, thereby avoiding a potential collision.

Unlike current systems from other global automakers—which typically offer rear collision warnings and pre-tighten seatbelts in anticipation of impact—Hyundai Mobis’s innovation empowers vehicles to take active, autonomous action to maintain safety.

“This technology elevates our competitiveness by enabling vehicles not just to warn but to respond independently in rear-end risk scenarios,” said Chung Soo-kyung, executive vice president and head of the Electronics Business Unit at Hyundai Mobis. “We aim to provide smart solutions that address both front and rear threats on the road.”

The technology, which previously won the grand prize at the 2022 Hyundai Motor Group Idea Contest, reflects Hyundai Mobis’s ongoing commitment to expanding autonomous safety capabilities. In addition to the acceleration function, the company is developing a lane-change feature that would allow vehicles to automatically shift lanes to evade persistent dangers from rear vehicles.
