Harman and Viasat Collaborate on Satellite Voice Calling

Harman and Viasat have formed a strategic collaboration to introduce in-cabin voice calling over satellite communications, enhancing vehicle connectivity in areas where cellular coverage is inadequate. This significant advancement was showcased at MWC Barcelona 2026 and utilizes Harman’s Ready Connect telematics control unit (TCU) alongside Viasatโ€™s mobile satellite services constellation.

Key Features and Capabilities

The newly developed satellite voice calling feature is primarily designed to bolster emergency assistance and roadside recovery services, especially in locations lacking cellular service. Instead of entirely replacing terrestrial connectivity, this satellite solution complements it by supporting 4G, 5G, and Narrowband Non-Terrestrial Network (NB-NTN) operations using a unified infrastructure. This flexibility enables a wide range of communications, from essential voice calls to messaging and low-data-rate telematics applications like remote vehicle monitoring and tracking.

Enhancing Safety and Connectivity

The enhanced connectivity ensures that vehicle occupants can access critical services and communicate effectively in emergencies, significantly improving safety during travel. With the feature, users can make calls to roadside assistance or other essential services, and even keep in touch with family during unexpected situations. This capability is particularly crucial for drivers traversing areas with limited or no cellular reception.

Aside from voice services, the collaboration aims to roll out future enhancements that would include broadband satellite services. This expansion could pave the way for in-cabin media streaming and high-bandwidth applications, further promoting an always-connected vehicle experience.

Commitment to Future Technologies

Both companies are dedicated to advancing automotive technology through this collaboration. Harmanโ€™s Ready Connect architecture adheres to industry standards, ensuring that it can integrate smoothly with emerging satellite connectivity solutions. This commitment enables automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to incorporate next-generation connectivity technologies confidently.

Looking forward, the collaboration promises more than just voice calling; it intends to support various applications such as emergency SOS features, remote vehicle operation, and diagnostics. This multi-faceted approach enhances the overall driving experience, offering robust and resilient connectivity options that keep pace with evolving market expectations.
