BYD’s Fangchengbao EV Brand Triples Sales as First Sedan Nears Launch

BYD’s premium electric-vehicle brand Fangchengbao tripled its sales in China year on year during the January-July period, providing a bright spot as growth slows across the automaker’s broader passenger-car business.

The offroad-focused brand unveiled the interior of its first electric sedan, the Fangcheng S, at the Chengdu International Auto Show in Sichuan province. BYD also displayed an offroad version of the model, highlighting its effort to expand Fangchengbao beyond rugged sport utility vehicles and attract a wider range of customers.

BYD has not announced a launch date for the Fangcheng S, but its public debut suggests the model is nearing commercial introduction. The sedan will test whether Fangchengbao can transfer its appeal among offroad enthusiasts to the much larger passenger-car market.

Fangchengbao, whose name roughly translates as “Formula Leopard,” occupies a premium position within BYD’s expanding brand portfolio. It is positioned above the company’s mass-market Dynasty and Ocean lines and emphasizes driving capability, distinctive styling and individual expression.

The brand’s sales performance contrasts with moderating momentum at BYD, which has faced intense price competition in China’s electric-vehicle market. The Shenzhen-based company, previously the world’s largest seller of electrified vehicles, has seen its rapid growth slow as automakers including Geely, Nio and Xiaomi compete aggressively for customers.

The Fangcheng S could broaden the brand’s potential customer base by offering a sedan while retaining the adventure-oriented identity associated with its SUV lineup. China’s electric-vehicle industry has increasingly blurred traditional boundaries between vehicle categories, allowing automakers to apply performance and lifestyle branding across different body styles.

For BYD, Fangchengbao’s expansion could also have financial significance. Its vehicles command higher prices than the company’s mainstream models, potentially helping protect profit margins as discounts weigh on the industry. A larger lineup could give BYD another way to defend its market position without relying solely on sales growth in lower-priced segments.

The Chengdu auto show, which runs through Aug. 30, is a major regional event for Chinese automakers seeking to reach consumers beyond the country’s largest coastal markets. Showcasing the Fangcheng S there reflects BYD’s ambition to expand Fangchengbao’s geographic and demographic reach.

Fangchengbao is one part of BYD’s broad brand structure, which ranges from the entry-level Seagull hatchback to the luxury Yangwang line. Its position between those extremes gives the company a brand focused on premium pricing and rugged capability.

The sedan’s market reception will indicate whether Fangchengbao can sustain its momentum outside its original offroad niche and become a larger contributor to BYD’s business.
