BYD Unveils Appearance of Seal Electric Sedan

Shenzhen-based automaker BYD unveiled on Wednesday the appearance of its new all-electric mid-size sedan, the Seal, which adopts the firm’s latest design language and is expected to be launched in April this year.

The BYD Seal adopts a closed air intake grille with a hood that has a raised part on both sides. The side of the car has sleek design and is equipped with hidden door handles. The model’s body size is 4800*1875*1460mm, and the wheelbase is 2920mm.

BYD has registered three versions of the Seal with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), including two rear-wheel drive versions and one four-wheel drive version. In addition, the Seal adopts BYD’s e-Platform 3.0, and leaks suggest that the dual-motor version can reach 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

In addition, Cailian Press learned from the minutes of a BYD investor meeting on Wednesday that the cumulative undelivered orders of BYD have reached 400,000 vehicles, and they are still increasing every month. Accordingly, the automaker conservatively expects sales to reach 1.5 million units in 2022. If supply chains are stable, it expects to sell 2 million vehicles.

According to the meeting notes, BYD’s Han DM-i model has been popular after its launching. It is estimated that the monthly sales volume of the Han series will exceed 30,000 vehicles.

BYD said that the growing price of raw material prices is slowing down at present, and if the price of lithium carbonate maintains current levels, it will not have much impact on the sales of new energy vehicles this year. The company predicts that the annual penetration rate of new energy vehicles will exceed 35%, possibly reaching 40%.

On March 29, BYD announced its 2021 annual report, showing that revenue in 2021 was 216.1 billion yuan ($34 billion), a year-on-year increase of 38.02%. The net profit attributable to shareholders of listed companies was 3.045 billion yuan, down 28.08% year-on-year.

According to the previously released official performance report, BYD’s cumulative sales of new energy vehicles in 2021 was 604,783 units, a year-on-year increase of 218.3%. In 2021, the cumulative production of new energy vehicles was 607,119, up 219.76% year-on-year.
