Tesla and Turo Launch Industry’s First Verified Self-Driving Rental Program

Marketplace partnership launches Oct. 28, offering travelers hands-on access to Full Self-Driving technology

Tesla and peer-to-peer car rental marketplace Turo are launching the first verified rental program for vehicles equipped with Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software, beginning October 28. The partnership marks a significant step in bringing autonomous driving technology to mainstream consumers and gives both companies a new channel to expand their reach.

Through Turo’s platform, customers will be able to search, filter, and book Tesla vehicles with FSD activated. The companies are using direct API integration to verify which cars actually have the software enabled, ensuring transparency for renters. Before pickup, travelers must review Tesla’s safety guidance and watch a company-produced tutorial on the system. Once activated, the experience requires active driver supervision and immediate readiness to take manual control.

The move comes as Tesla work to expand FSD’s user base beyond current adopters. Globally, approximately 1.7 million customers have paid for the software out of more than 10 million Tesla vehicles sold to date. In North America, over 75% of third-quarter deliveries included a paid FSD subscription at the point of sale—up roughly 20% from the previous quarter. Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently signaled a strategic shift, noting that “people are buying FSD with a car attached, not the other way around,” indicating that the software has become a primary sales driver rather than an add-on feature.

For Turo, the arrangement deepens ties with one of its most popular brands. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y rank as the third and fourth most-rented vehicles on the platform year-to-date. To incentivize participation, Turo is offering eligible U.S. hosts a free one-month FSD trial subscription.

Consumer interest in autonomous driving technology appears robust. Turo’s research indicates that 55% of Americans are interested in driverless technology for travel, with the figure rising to 71% among Gen Z. More than a fifth of Americans interested in the technology said they would feel comfortable spending seven or more hours in a self-driving vehicle.

The announcement boosted investor confidence, with Tesla shares climbing approximately 6.5% on the news. Turo, which remains privately held, reported record results in the first half of 2026 and projects $3.3 billion in gross booking value and $1.2 billion in revenue by year-end, representing its fifth consecutive profitable year. The company saw 19% year-over-year growth in booked days and 17% growth in revenue during the second quarter.

The rental program offers a new marketing channel as Tesla continues developing the system despite ongoing regulatory and safety scrutiny, including work on an in-house AI-based mapping and navigation platform with voice control for future releases.
