South Korea’s LG Electronics is unveiling a new traffic safety solution that merges two distinct vehicle communication methods to help drivers avoid accidents and hazards on the road. The company announced the integrated system on October 20 and will demonstrate it this week at the 2026 ITS World Congress in Gangneung, South Korea, running through October 23.
The system combines vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. V2X enables vehicles to exchange information directly with other vehicles and roadside infrastructure through dedicated equipment, offering rapid response times. V2N, by contrast, connects vehicles to mobile networks and cloud servers, providing broader coverage for accessing accident, weather, construction, and traffic signal data across wider areas.
LG Electronics designed the hybrid approach to leverage the strengths of both technologies. Within the communication range of roadside units installed along roads, at traffic lights, and utility poles, the system uses information from both methods. In areas where direct communication is limited, the V2N network-based method delivers critical information. This redundancy ensures vehicles continuously receive reliable hazard alerts even as communication environments change.
Demonstration and Real-World Application
Registered congress visitors can experience the system firsthand by riding in a demonstration vehicle along a 2.6-kilometer route. The test showcases how the technology detects and alerts drivers to disabled vehicles, road construction zones, severe weather, approaching ambulances, and pedestrian collision risks.
Safety Standards and Market Positioning
The solution meets the top-rating criteria of the Euro NCAP safety assessment program, the European new car safety evaluation standard. This achievement signals that automakers can meet increasingly stringent safety requirements while supporting the transition to software-defined vehicles that enhance safety through software upgrades rather than hardware alone.
LG Electronics brings significant expertise to this field. The company holds the world’s leading market share in vehicle telematics and recently became the first in its industry to apply a smart telematics solution based on R16, the latest 5G communications standard, to a European mass-production vehicle. The company is also supplying vehicle communications systems for the GV90, a full-size electric SUV, supporting services such as remote control and over-the-air software updates.
Future Outlook
The announcement represents LG Electronics’ expansion beyond traditional vehicle components into traffic safety software integrated with road infrastructure. As major safety evaluation standards increasingly emphasize advanced driver assistance functions, demand from automakers for such technologies is expected to grow.
However, commercialization of V2X remains dependent on infrastructure development, including the deployment of roadside units and regulatory refinement across different countries. The pace of infrastructure investment by region will be a critical factor determining how quickly the market expands globally.
